I am very happy to hear from folks who are reaching out about work in writing, editing, translation, and/or cultural consulting, but please be explicit if you are reaching out about paid work. Thank you.
Cultural consultations/sensitivity reading: I’m currently open to sensitivity reading requests.
- Please note I do not perform sensitivity reading/cultural consultations for any white authors/creators writing an “identity story“, where the project’s main storyline is about the identity-related challenges, trauma, racism, harmful stereotypes, or microaggressions faced by Chinese or Chinese diaspora characters or communities.
- Examples of identity stories: stories about anti-Asian racism, Asian massage parlours, the challenges faced by Asian migrant workers, the Cultural Revolution, the Sino-Japanese War, important Chinese cultural traditions that have been long historically appropriated, etc.
- I will ONLY consider these projects when there’s a creator on the team with cultural ties to the identity being explored.
Book reviews: I’m currently closed to book review requests. However, I’m interested in being in conversation with other BIPOC writers/poets/translators who are releasing new books, so I may be interested in interviewing them for your publication. Please feel free to reach out to inquire.
Agencies offering translation/localization/cultural consultation work: I keep getting contacted by localization/translation agencies that reach out to offer work, make me fill out a bunch of forms, and then suddenly surprise me by asking me to take an unpaid multi-page and super intensive “translation test” that would take many hours. I consider such practice to be extremely exploitative. If you contact me without being upfront about a translation test, I will add you to a list of companies that I boycott and never work with.
