I have been very slow with posting updates to this blog, but it’s time that I share some news about what I have been up to this year. 🙂
First of all, I have a new poem, “Where are you and your fish really from?”, that’s out with Arc Poetry Magazine’s summer 2019 issue. You can order the issue here! Thank you so much to the Doyali and the team at Arc for a wonderful issue. It’s an honour to be in an issue with so many writers I respect.
Also, my short story “Sparrow” was recently named a runner-up for Sequestrum Magazine‘s 2019 Editor’s Reprint Award. A lovely writer and friend, Tamara Jong, kindly interviewed me about the story and my writing for Augur Magazine’s blog. You can read the interview to find out my inspiration behind the story as well as see snippets about my writing process and favourite authors.
“Sparrow,” which originally appeared in Clarkesworld, has also been reprinted in Kasma Magazine! Thank you Alex for choosing this story and José Baetas for his wonderful illustration (see below). This is the first time someone has illustrated a short story of mine, and I love how the art reflects central ideas in my story.
In terms of upcoming news, I’m helping to co-judge a poetry contest at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown (you can write and submit a poem for this at their Mid-Autumn Festival event). You can also visit the garden for tea tastings, an art exhibit, and other events related to the festival.
On Sept 29th from 2-4pm, I’ll be back again at the garden to read a poem at an annual bilingual poetry reading organized by the Chinese Canadian Writers Association. Thank you to the writer and author Qing Yang for translating my poem “Oblivion” for the reading. Please free to say hi if you end up attending either event. 🙂
Finally, my short story “Fault Lines” will be coming out in the fall issue of The Malahat Review, and also, I’ll be appearing on the podcast Jianghu Hustle as a guest later this month to chat about a wuxia film. Will post links for these when I have more details to share. As always, thanks for reading and for your support!
