2018 Publications, Events, and Updates

I’m a very irresponsible and infrequent blogger, but I figure I should post this summary to give some updates to friends and readers about what I have been up to this year. 🙂 🙂 I am much more active on Twitter so you can always follow me on there at @yilinwriter.

Awards and shortlists

  • A short story of mine (currently under consideration elsewhere) placed second in the August 2018 Spark Literary Prize.
  • My short story “Fault Lines” was longlisted for The New Quarterly’s Peter Hinchcliffe Award for Short Fiction.

Work and affiliation updates

  • I officially resigned from Ricepaper a few months ago as a result of their mishandling of racism against Chinese poets and do not endorse any of their work or the work of any groups run by the same leadership (Literasian, Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop).
  • I’m returning to work for the Growing Room: A Feminist Literary Festival again as the Volunteer Coordinator for a third year in the row. If you’re free in March and based in Vancouver, please consider signing up for this Volunteer Newsletter to learn more about volunteer opportunities when there is news.
  • After my short story sale to Clarkesworld, I have also joined the Codex Writer’s Group, a writing group consisting of pros and neo-pros working in the SFF genres. Please free to say hi if you’re also a Codexian!

Upcoming work and projects

  • I’m currently assistant-editing Room‘s magic issue, which will be released around next spring. It will also include my interview with Janie Chang.
  • A pitch for a creative nonfiction piece about my summer research trip to China and Hong Kong to learn about martial arts fiction has been accepted for Carte Blanche’s blog, to come in 2019.
  • Plus a number of book reviews and interviews with authors are to come as well.

Recent Travels and Readings

  • April 26 to July 25, 2018: I took a 3-month trip to Hong Kong and China. Some highlights include:
    • talking to Tammy Ho Lai-Ming from Cha: An Asian Literary Journal about translation
    • meeting many Chinese science fiction writers and the editors of Science Fiction World magazine in Mainland China
    • interviewing martial artists and martial arts experts in Hong Kong
    • seeing manuscripts and exhibits related to Jin Yong and Gu Long at the HK Heritage Museum and Hong Kong Public Library
    • learning martial arts at the Mount Qingcheng School, and visiting many museums, mountains, temples, and historic sites associated with different martial arts schools.

Thank you again to everyone who took time to meet me, as well as for funding and support via SSHRC’s Michael Smith Travel Supplement, UBC Arts Graduate Research Award, UBC Go Global’s Self-Directed Research Abroad Award, and Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada’s Asia Connect program.
  • August 2018: I read excerpts from two short stories at the Surrey Muse reading.
  • September 2018: I read at a bilingual poetry reading at Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s Garden, hosted by the Chinese Canadian Writer’s Association. It was my second time participating in this event and cool to hear poems read in both English and Mandarin. My poem “absent” was translated into Mandarin and read aloud alongside the English.

Upcoming events and readings

  • Podcasts: I am super honored and excited to have been invited onto two podcasts recently! This is a new and exciting territory for me. I will be talking about martial arts fiction and narratives as well as my trip with the Bedrock Podcast. I’ll also be reading some of my work on Books on the Radio. I will post links to these when it’s up.
  • Visit to Tornto: On May 13, 2019, I will be reading at Glad Day Books in Toronto as a part of the Emerging Writers Reading Series. I’m super excited about this. Please come out and say hi if you’re in the area. I’d love to meet writers and publishing folks in Toronto while there.
